Engineer feeds passion for music

Disco 55, who's real name is Obakeng Modisaotlile Tabe, moved to Johannesburg from Mahikeng in North West in 2005 to further his studies, but decided to fuel his music passion instead.

Tabe now has a single called Everything To Me, on which he worked with some of the heavyweights in the music industry. "It was a great privilege to work with the greatest ... Magesh is on the song, Harrison Crump composed the lyrics while co-producing with me, and Neo Beats did a hip-hop verse."

The aspiring international muso holds a National Diploma in Electrical Engineering from the Vaal University of Technology.

His song is currently on the airplay of most radio stations. "Everything for me is going well. The SABC is starting to pump the song and there are many song requests. This tells me people love the song.

"This song is about a man who is fed up with her cheating woman. Although it's not a personal song, I have invested a lot of soul in it," said Tabe.

This rising star is no stranger to the music world, having been involved in the industry for over 14 years. "I started spinning the decks at the age of 13. I was spotted by Robbie Malinga and Mojalefa Thebe, who took me under their wing.

"I started as a dancer for Thebe, and from then on I learned the art of production and polished my craft. I unfortunately cannot dance anymore, eish. I have a belly now," he chuckles. Tabe has a new album coming up, expected to be released in April. The name of the album is still unknown.

On the album, he worked with stalwarts like Sifiso Fakude on Swiherile, a Xitsonga house song; Thas Man, who produced the famous song Bosso Ke mang; and Bheki Ngcobo.

The budding DJ is also working on a track with music veteran and mentor Doc Shebeleza.
