Mdix will get you jiving on dance floor

DJ Mdix has sent fans of house music into a tizz, just in time for the festive season.

His delightful hit uMvulo has even earned him endorsement from some of the most popular house music stars such as Prince Kaybee.

The song about blue Mondays boasts Mdix's soulful signature and is pushed by live instruments. It features vocalist Zanda Zakuza and has done well on the local charts and dance floors. It's already peaked at number one at TruFM, it's on the Metro FM charts and enjoys high rotation on Ukhozi FM and Igagasi FM.

"Everybody can relate to blue Mondays, that's why the song is doing so well. The element of soul makes it special too, the strings and the saxophone. I grew up on jazz that was played mostly by my uncles," Mdix says.

The 28-year-old, whose real name is Lungisani Khuzwayo, has not always had it easy. Raised by a single mother, the last born of three, he had to fend for himself from an early age, so much so that he dropped out of school. He became the child wonder of house in Port Shepstone where he comes from.

"I started playing music in high school. I was so good that gigs just poured in. I got so busy that I had to leave school in Grade 11 because of hectic travelling. I was doing places as far as Mthatha, East London and Durban. So imagine having to go back to school on Monday after a busy weekend.

"Not that the money was great. I had to go and study a one-year course in IT to support myself, but two years later I was back finishing my matric via correspondence."

Mdix's life took a turn for the better just this month when he inked a deal with Open Mic productions who heard his music in Durban.

They flew him to Johannesburg to record the album. Things have been going swimmingly well because he is working with his homeboy, producer Siphiwe Jula.

Some of the strongest tracks besides uMvulo are Ubani keLona featuring Naima Kay and Vision featuring Sisanda Nelson. Then there is Kurufelo with King Monada which is sure to be a scorcher.

"I've been working alone for all these years. With my new record company and moving to Johannesburg, I see a bright future."
