Former Idols SA winner, Karabo, aims to remain relevant

As South Africa prepares to crown its newest Idol, Karabo Mogane, the man who picked up the title last year, is capitalising on the excitement and hype by releasing a new album.

This, his second album, is his way of proving that there is life after Idols SA.

Mogane said since his famous win over Mmatema Moreki last year, he has been quite the traveller, visiting Mauritius, England, the US and Dubai where he performed on some of the trips.

Mogane said he was also doing a lot of corporate gigs locally and some festivals, but admitted he is not booked as often as dance musicians.

Mogane also recorded a soundtrack for The Lion Guard, a kiddies' series on DStv's Disney Junior.

But what excites him more is the release of Matters of the Heart, a love-soaked 10-track album of ballads on which he wrote seven of the songs, and co-wrote three with Robbie Malinga.

"It was incredible to write my music. It has proved that I'm a versatile artist," he said.

Mogane said the inspiration came from his personal experiences and those of others.

Talking about his frame of mind, Mogane said he was in love with his family and friends but ready to get back in the dating game.

"I'm looking to get back into dating and resurrecting that part of my life, hence the title of the album," he laughed.

The first single is Khakhathi, which he sings in Venda and English.

Other outstanding tracks are Sondela featuring Malinga, the sexy Midnight Hour , the tortured Something's Gotta Give and Lerato , a love song he performs in Sotho.

Mogane said winning Idols was only a stepping stone. "It's not simple and easy, winning is just one step. You need to be a fighter for what you want and prove to people to take you seriously, whether it's people you perform for or the record company. Your breakthrough might come in the most unexpected ways, so you always have to put your best foot forward."

He said the hard work started after the show. "You get used to be pampered and suddenly have to be on your own and ask questions and honour deadlines. You're literally thrown in the deep end and have to survive."

He agreed that some Idols winners have struggled to remain relevant and blamed it on their albums or the genre they pick, or not "pushing" enough.

Mogane was diplomatic when asked who he was backing in the Idols race. "It's incredible that Thami [Shobede] didn't make the top 10 last year and is now in the finale this year. It's also amazing that at her first attempt and motivated by her school kids, Noma [Khumalo] got to the finals. Good luck to them."
