NASTY C riding crest of wave

No new artist has rocked the local music scene this year like hip-hop break-out star Nasty C. And following his glorious year, he cites working with American artist Omari Hardwick as a clear standout.

The duo worked together during Hardwick's trip to South Africa about a month ago after Hardwick had expressed an interest to work with the newcomer in an interview with Time Out.

The fruitful end result has been two songs, one titled A Star is Born and track-listed on Nasty C's newly released debut album Bad Hair.

The 19-year-old rapper reveals that the still-to-be-heard second song belongs to Hardwick, who plans to drop an album early next year.

"2016 has been a great year for me. I got to make my mark in the South African music industry. Working with Omari Hardwick will always stand out this year," Nasty C says.

"He was just so cool about it. Everything just went so smoothly and it was all done in a short space of time."

Released on September 23, Nasty C's 15-track album has been sitting comfortably on the top of the local iTunes album chart ever since it was released, charting ahead of new albums from Solange Knowles and One Republic.

"I was expecting the album to do good, but not this good, not on this level.

"It's humbling to me and I'm still in shock," Nasty C says.

Tomorrow, Nasty C will take to the stage as one of the headline performers at the MTV Africa Music Awards (Mamas) along with Future, Babes Wodumo and Cassper Nyovest.

"The audience can expect awesomeness from my performance. A lot of energy and rapping," Nasty C teases.

He is also nominated in a number of categories and would like to win best breakthrough artist, where he is going up against the likes of Babes Wodumo, Emtee, Falz, Tekno and Nathi.

"I'm very excited about the Mamas. I never thought it will happen so quick. If I can get best breakthrough artist that will be so dope. I feel like I have done a lot this year," Nasty C shares.

With all his big accomplishments this year, Nasty C says he is slowly starting to settle into the idea that he has arrived.

"I feel like I have arrived. I don't know when I knew, I guess I didn't really get to see or take note of the first wave. But over time, I just got to a place where I've noticed the response on social media and the traction that I've received. It shows that my music has gone really far."
