Brenda Ramadiehe has landed prime real estate in art and she can't stop smiling.

She is one of the four artists whose works will adorn the iconic Soweto Towers from this month. Vodacom opened up a competition to have artists submit their works for consideration as part of the rebranding of the towers after the contract with FNB ended.

The 34-year-old drew an image of a group selfie which she felt best represented the spirit and energy of Soweto, and includes some landmarks of the township.

"My image is interesting and represents Soweto, and the joyfulness of people. It's great and I'm honoured," she shares.

Ramadiehe works for the Curriculum Development Programme Trust in Bertrams, Johannesburg, as a full-time artist in residency.

As the only woman in the winning group, Ramadiehe says it doesn't shock her anymore.

"I've been working on projects as the only woman. I did my three-year printmaking course and graduated as the only woman. I'm used to this. It can be difficult for women in art because most of them get married and things change and priorities as mothers, wives and daughters-in-law. And art needs practice, it slips away if you don't keep it up."

She says she will probably cry when she finally sees her artwork up on the towers.

"At this point I take it from my daughter's point of view, whenever we pass the towers she excitedly says 'my mother's artwork is coming here' and I wish it proves to her that nothing is impossible."

She says it has boosted her self-belief and confidence. "As women we face challenges and give up, but this has added me fuel to go on. It gives me hope that there is a better tomorrow in this profession I'm in."

Ramadiehe was born in Soweto and as a travelling artist, as she puts it, "three years in one place is too much".

"I'm not just an artist that creates, I have the skill of sharing what I have acquired and I want to unleash things that ground women in Africa."
