J Something's star as a foodie is on the rise. And it's hardly surprising when you hear his journey.

The MiCasa front man hosted the second and last Lumiere Enlightenment Dinner Series at Steyn City, north of Johannesburg, last night after entertaining a select crowd at the posh Signature in Morningside, Sandton a fortnight ago.

The musician says while he may seem like an accidental cook, the kitchen is something he is most familiar with.

"When you see me making food, understand that this is not something that I planned. Food is actually the most familiar thing to me. Nobody sang in my family, music was birthed in me naturally. My mother is like a superhero. She was working at the Fish River Diner on the bridge, my dad was in the hotel and they worked day and night and I lived in the staff village."

He says he ate more at restaurants and slept in more staff quarters and hotel rooms, than at home. "I don't remember sitting at the table with my parents. They were always working and that's the hospitality industry. So that's where the food passion comes from."

He found himself cooking after hitting a brick wall.

"Two years into MiCasa I went through a bad patch and lost passion, it was a dark hole. I realised that the problem was that I didn't make time for myself, I was fully consumed in this thing. I went back home to find a hobby for myself. I started cooking every Monday and posted some images on Instagram, and people started asking me for recipes and a cookbook. Two years later I got a TV show, and it was an honour and now here I am doing all these cool things with food.

"My food philosophy is what my mother taught me, which is to cook with love. In the Portuguese cuisine all you need is olive oil, lemon, garlic, piripiri - I just like those ingredients' simplicity. Even in my music, we are simple guys and not complicated."

J will host Something's Cooking, a pop-up restaurant at the Delicious Festival where MiCasa will also be performing on October 8 and 9 in Kyalami.
