Birdie hosts show to raise funds for international tour

Before she even released her debut album, singer and songwriter Tribute "Birdie" Mboweni had already begun her singing career abroad, performing at venues on the Arabian peninsular, specifically Qatar and United Arab Emirates, and also in places like Zambia.

Today Birdie and her band continue their mission to raise funds for a series of international tours, with a performance at Ditsong National Museum of Cultural History in Pretoria.

Earlier this month she was out performing in France at gig was made possible by government. The singer accompanied the South African delegation to commemorate the soldiers who lost their lives during the World War 1 battle in Delville, France, a 100 years ago.

"It was a pleasure going to Paris, despite the sombre occasion to honour our fallen soldiers. I am grateful to the Department of Arts and Culture for making the trip possible for me and my band," said Mboweni.

Birdie will need close to R100 000 to travel to the two scheduled performances in east Africa later this year.

The singer has been invited to Bayimba International  Festival in Uganda in September and  Karibu Music Festival in Bagamoyo, Tanzania, in November.

"It's a lot of money but I want to go to these places, with my band.  One of my earliest dreams since I became aware that I can sing, was to travel the world and perform on different stages around the world as a solo artist and tell my story to the world," said Mkhuhlu-born singer, Mpumalanga, artist.

"Although I have traveled as a young musician and stayed in countries like Dubai, I was still growing as an artist.

These tours are  different because I will be traveling as a recording artist, taking risks and exploring the world with my music. It is the realisation of my dream and I look forward to living it."

Early next year, in February, she will sing in the annual Sauti za Busara Music Festival in Zanzibar.

The petite songstress with massive vocal ability is also a qualified nature conservationist. In September she will be graduating with her Masters degree from the University of Pretoria.

Her debut album "Birdie",  released last year through Native Rythmns, continues to be on high rotation on radio. This all due to hits such as "Soul and Heart", "Mpfula Ya Na" and "MaGumede". However, quality runs through the entire 18-track songlist of the album.

  • Ditsong museum in Pretoria is at the corner of Bosman  and Visagie streets. Tickets sell for R100 and enquiries can be referred to 011 447 5199 or 012 323 1220.
