Thando Hopa gets her big movie break

She’s a lawyer‚ part-time model and now on the cusp of being a movie star. TMG Entertainment can reveal that Thando has been invited to the Directors Lab at Sundance in Utah.

Founded by Robert Redford‚ the Sundance Institute Lab Program was created to build the independent film movement and sees directors‚ producers and cast members gather to brainstorm ideas.

While a decision on the movie will only be made at the lab‚ Thando has been cast as Martha‚ a young afronaut who had big dreams to go to the moon.

Thando says she had to audition for the role and after two weeks was told that she had cracked the nod to attend the workshop.

“I think this is a beautiful space for one to grow. I’ve always been interested in acting. I went into law because it was a stable decision at the time. Going to this‚ where you have so many people who really know what they are doing‚ who really allow you to get out of your own skin and be able to interpret being someone else‚ this is the best place to learn.”

Sundance has seen many directors launch their careers and is considered one of the most influential festivals in indie cinema. Breakout names include The Coen Brothers‚ Christopher Nolan and Quentin Tarantino.

Thando has become a powerful voice across Africa as she fights to change perceptions against albinism on the continent.

We caught up with her at designer Gert-Johan Coetzee’s wedding celebration‚ where he showcased some of his bridal gowns.

Watch an excited Thando talk about her new career step here. Oh‚ and she says she won’t forget about us when she’s rich and famous.
