Movie Review: The Other Side of The Door

SowetanLIVE got the opportunity to go watch the newest horror film in the movie scene.

On a gloomy and rainy Wednesday night, we were piled into a shuttle and transported to a haunted Jan Smuts house in Irene Pretoria.

It was to be a night of haunting after all and what a better way to start then by having dinner and a tour of a haunted house.

Midway through dinner Eskom played it’s part by instigating some load-shedding, luckily candles were available. The house was spookier than ever and a few good shrieks were heard thanks to our excellent hosts.

Sadly the movie didn’t produce as many shrieks as the haunted house. The movie promised a lot and failed to deliver.

Refreshingly set in India, it’s the story of a mother's desperation to communicate her regrets to her deceased child and to hold onto them just a little longer.

Plotline

Sarah Wayne Callies plays the distraught mother, Maria and Jeremy Sisto plays the role of Michael, the father. The two are parents to Lucy and Oliver, tragedy strikes and in a bid to help the distraught Maria come to terms with her grief Piki (Suchitra Pillai) lets her in on an ancient secret.

Deep in the forest of the village of her youth lies a temple that is a gateway between the nether world and ours.

Piki then teaches Maria the ritual she should perform to speak to her deceased son Oliver one last time, with the cryptic warning to NEVER open the door.   Maria of course opens the door and unleashes hell on the family.

The movie fails to live up to it’s promise however, certainly people don’t watch horror movies for the plot, but this one set up high expectations.

It was also a little short on the chills.

The stand out performances in the movie was that of Bollywood actress, Suchitra Pillai and Sarah Wayne Callies. Pillai  played the part of mysterious house servant with secrets to perfection, whilst Callies transports you to a place of motherly desperation that anyone can identify with even if you have no kids yourself.

The movie is a good watch for those who like their horror mild and not hair raising.

The Other Side Of The Door opens in theatres on 11 March.

Rating: 3/10
