For the Soweto dance crew Soulistic Fusion Trio, dance is not just an art form, but it is who they are.

It's part of their very being, as dance resides in their hearts and souls. They showed that when they won the RedSquare dance competition last weekend, walking away with R50000 in prize money.

The Trio are Khulekani Nxumalo, Ithupeng Sereme and Blessing Dhlamini. They entered many competitions but the latest was the biggest and launched the group in a big way.

"We are still excited because we won against Gauteng's best dance crews. It is a humbling experience to win," says Dhlamini.

As the competition was taking place in Pretoria, Dhlamini says the lads from Dobsonville knew that they did not have home crowd advantage, but they brought a lot of charisma and creativity on stage, which easily won them support and impressed the judges.

"We knew that we had to be innovative about everything. During the competition, we presented the judges with energetic and effortless fusion of various cultural and dance influences."

Dhlamini reveals that winning in Pretoria has brought them closer to their dream of becoming the country's best sbhujwa dance group.

He say they are aiming for local and international stages. They plan is to use some of their winnings to bolster their profile and market their services.

"We want to invest the money back into the crew and having our own website, and organise transport that will help us when travelling."

Dhlamini says when they started four years ago, their aim was to interpret sbhujwa modern dance in their own way.

"We started from our own image, and we decided that our costume will have a lot of vintage, including the hairdo," he says.

Four years on, the crew has attended a number of workshops and entered a few competitions.

In 2012 they were crowned as Soweto's Masters of Isibhujwa. As with many dance crews from the township, the trio do not have any professional training. They collectively create their dance routines.

Last year, they won the Soweto TV Dance Off competition.
