Idols reject Morobane scores record deal

She has entered Idols SA twice and failed to crack it, but now Boitumelo Morobane is certain her time has come.

She has been signed up by Universal Music record company.

The 21-year-old from Vosloorus, Ekurhuleni, says not making it last year, on her second attempt, was difficult, especially because she was far off the mark she had set for herself.

"I thought I'd at least get to the top four. I just thought people didn't like me, hence they didn't vote for me," she says.

"My initial response was disappointment, but I was not let down. I didn't doubt that I would get an opportunity from Idols."

The call from the record company came just days after she was eliminated.

Morobane was studying musical theatre at the Tshwane University of Technology when she tried her luck on Idols.

She had to drop out in her first year because the competition demanded most of her attention. But she doesn't see herself returning to her studies in the near future.

"If I have to go back. I'll have to do it full time," she insists.

Her parents didn't get angry over her decision to leave school because they believed in her dreams.

"They've always supported me because I told them my plan and they saw how structured it was."

Morobane doesn't only sing, she also acts and dances.

"I really push my acting and dancing. I want to be a triple act."

Last year she featured in the play Ubizane.

Her album is expected to drop sometime next year.

She says her single, High on Love, has seen moderate success in air play and the genre of the song is something that people might not expect from her because of her soul and jazz background.

"The sound I'm doing now is more pop and R&B, infused with house. There are a lot of people doing that kind of sound, but I love it because my sound and style is more fun."
