A golden ticket on Idols SA doesn't only mean a spot on the bus to Sun City, but is also an escape from a life of hardship.

On Sunday, Mzansi Magic flights the pre-recorded Durban auditions, so look out for Mondli Mkize, a car washer from Lovu township in Amanzimtoti.

The 25-year-old said he fell on hard times after he finished matric and couldn't find a job, so instead of staying at home he decided to wash cars.

"I just decided to do something with my life. It helps me to save money to go back to school. I want to further my studies. My ultimate goal is to become a firefighter or paramedic as I am always helping people," he said.

He started singing in primary school and then made his way into social gatherings like weddings.

To prepare for the Idols SA stage he has been singing different genres at home since last November. He said the show was a great chance for him to rediscover his talent.

Another contestant to watch is Sizwe Mthalane, an orphan who grew up in the children's home God's Golden Acre Khayelihle in Cato Ridge. His performance is spectacular.
