A moment with Chaka Khan

The original Diva of Funk Chaka Khan is truly ‘every woman’.

Khan who has been in the music industry for over forty years with popular hits such as ‘Tell Me Something Good’, ‘I Feel For You’ and ‘I’m Every Woman’ performed at the DSTV Delicious festival over the weekend.

As expected the singer has her fans dancing and begging for more as she took them through a musical journey.

Sowetan LIVE was lucky enough to score an interview with the Grammy Award winner who has sold over 200 million album copies worldwide.

The season singer-songwriter spoke about a number of things, including her love for up and coming artists in the music industry, especially am Smith whom she refers to as a friend.

We asked her if she had, had a chance to hear any South African music and she said she had not.

“I feel terrible I about it. Every time I come I do collect some CD’s. But I generally do not listen to music a lot at home because music is what I do. It’s not what I do for fun. What I do for fun is gardening. However I was talking to one of the promoters when I was coming in today and he was telling me that there are a couple of groups I need to listen to. So he is going to send me some songs”

Khan mentioned that her favourite part of any concert is when there are children in the audience and they come up on stage to sing and dance with her.

“I love that, because I love children. I’d rather be with children than grown-ups any day.”

Her parting statement was for young, up and coming musicians all over the world.

“This is the music BUSINESS. Don’t go into it starry-eyed and thinking that everything will be alright. I would suggest that you get some knowledge of the business, how it works. It’s like every other business, a little more cuckoo but like every other business.  Get a little bit of legal knowledge, signing contracts, what not to sign. I’ve seen a lot of people get hurt really bad. It’s happened to me earlier in my career.”
