Kwaito artist Candy Mokwena is in the running to be honoured as one of Limpopo's brightest stars at the province's inaugural Film, Arts, Music and Entertainment (F.A.M.E) Awards.

Mokwena is nominated in the categories of Best Female Artist and Best Dance Artist.

She can't hide her excitement. "This means the world to me. It gives us as entertainers the encouragement to aim even higher."

In the Best Female Award, she is nominated against Winnie Mashaba, Maduvha, Fiesta Black and Judith Sephuma, while for Best Dance Artist she will slug it out with DJ Ganyani, Da Capo, Chynamusique, Raps Vhafuwi and Fiesta Black.

Mokwena says if she wins she will donate money to her home village of Ga-Sedibeng where playing facilities for children are scarce.

"I noticed with my granddaughter's crèche that they do not have jungle gyms. They play on logs of wood that scratch them and tear their clothes. They are not safe."

The awards are divided into three categories: music, TV/film and entertainment including radio, sport, journalism and comedy.

The biggest award is the Best Entertainer and will be contested by the likes of TV personalities Rami Chuene, Clement Maosa, Mashabela Galane and Gabriel Temudzani.

The awards, founded by businessman Matodzi Makananisa, are backed by the Limpopo department of sports, arts and culture and will be held on May 9.

They are open exclusively to performers born in the province or those who made a significant influence in Limpopo.
