Rita Wilson 'overwhelmed' by support

Rita Wilson is ''overwhelmed'' by the support she has received since undergoing a double mastectomy last week after being diagnosed with breast cancer.

The 'Girls' actress, who had both of her breasts removed and reconstructive surgery last week after being diagnosed with breast cancer, has thanked her fans for sending her ''prayers and good wishes'' in recent days. The 58-year-old actress wrote on Twitter: ''I am overwhelmed with gratitude by your prayers and good wishes and the kindness you're sending.

Thank you. Thank you.'' Rita, who is married to Oscar winner Tom Hanks, was inundated with heartwarming messages from her followers and fellow celebrities, including John Stamos, Marie Osmond, Christina Applegate and Sara Bareilles, after opening up about her health issues earlier this week.

The star made the decision to go public with her illness to encourage other women to get checked for breast cancer because ''early diagnosis'' is key when it comes to beating the disease.

She said: ''I feel blessed to have a loving, supportive husband, family, friends and doctors and that I am the beneficiary of advances in the field of breast cancer and reconstruction.

I am getting better every day and look forward to renewed health. ''I hope this will encourage others to get a second opinion and to trust their instincts if something doesn't 'feel' right.''
