SIYABONGA Radebe and Lerato Mvelase are set to take their relationship to a higher level after six years of love and birth of their 22-month-old daughter.

Claiming their place as the next TV power couple, the engaged duo has been contracted to produce a sitcom for SABC1 titled Him, Her and the Guys.

The production got the green light from the public broadcaster last week and is scheduled to premiere in May under their company SepJan Productions.

The name comes from their birth months, she was born in September while he is a January baby.

They have their fingers in many different pies including theatre production, music, television and stand-up comedy already. So, Connie and Shona Ferguson might have stiff competition.

Radebe, who is also a stand-up comedian, played the role of Xolani, the Ben 10 lover of Mam'Ruby in the now defunct Generations while Mvelase has starred in Intersexions among many other dramas.

Speaking on the pros and cons of working with a spouse, Radebe, who played Mvelase's lover on Home Affairs, said: "It comes with a lot of challenges. We fight a lot because we are two different people, for example she might want rose petals and ice cream on the table while I may want nothing on it.

"Even though I am making a silly example, there are challenges like that. At the end we let whoever is stronger win."

Mvelase's more sober response: "The challenge of working with your partner is emotional attachment and because of that you want that person to constantly agree with everything you say. When it comes to business, your emotions have to be countered and you have to know that this fight is not with my husband or wife but with my business partner. There is a lot of emotional growth we are going through because we are still learning."

She said Radebe was more concerned about the creative aspects while she does the paperwork and ensures that schedules are met.

Of the new sitcom, he said: "It is a normal sitcom about young people who are in a relationship and the dynamics that come with that."

Word in the corridors of the SABC's Henley Studios is that the couple will also be in front of the camera but Radebe preferred to "keep the public in suspense".

The actress said they also have a travelling theatrical show called My Spirit Lives, inspired by her role on Intersexions as a lesbian who was beaten and raped.

"I felt that I should do something to help. Women get abused every day and lesbian women get abused daily for being lesbian."

Meanwhile, from February 1 Radebe will also host Kasi Cribs: Edladleni on the opulent and most envied township homes.
