DJ CLEO has given up on his plan to grace the pitches of the Absa Premier League as a goalkeeper.

"I'm not 21 years old anymore ... and have responsibilities. I'm no longer pursuing it [the soccer career]," the 35-year-old said about his decision to quit his year-and-a-half shot at playing in the country's elite league.

He spoke to Sowetan ahead of his performance on SABC1's music show Live Amp on Friday night.

The award-winning producer and artist made headlines about half a year ago, saying he was putting his music career on hold, for goalkeeper gloves with one of the teams in the PSL.

Fans of both soccer and his music never saw the lanky musician in an official match with any of the three teams he trained and tried out with.

He was with BidVest Wits, TUKS and Moroka Swallows. But being an optimist, he doesn't sound like one with regrets.

"I made connections and met interesting people. I'm thinking of getting into other things like being an agent and managing players," he said of a seemingly new-found passion.

Sporting a pair of hip red Jordans on his feet, he returned to the stage on Friday night with a performance on Live Amp.

He belted out his new song Gogo (Ben 10 anthem) alongside relatively new rappers Duncan and Lection and also iFani.

"I enjoyed working with these young guys. I felt like a kid at a candy store yesterday while we were shooting the music video."

The song is a reprise of unknown US rapper OT Genasis' current hit song CoCo.

In the US version Genasis raps about loving "CoCo", which refers to cocaine.

Cleo produced the song and named his version Gogo (Ben 10 anthem) where he and the featured artists rap about their affection for an older woman.

"It's just a light fun-hearted song," he said.

He admitted that his administration is still unstable so he was not able to say when exactly he'll drop his next album.

He said the responsibility of taking care of his family and paying bills made him ditch his goalkeeping dream for something more realistic and familiar - making music.
