AN ADVENTUROUS American singer packed with chutzpah is reaping the benefits.

Aaron Cox, who came to South Africa a few months ago to start a new life with his local wife, has already shared the stage with the likes of Proverb, Vusi Mahlasela and the Soweto Gospel Choir.

"It was an honour to perform with these South African music greats. It was a blessing to have been new in the country and afforded the opportunity to perform with them," says Cox, a soul singer who is inspired by gospel andneo-soul.

The 27-year-old, who met his wife Nontobeko last year and married her earlier this year, says he has found inspiration in the rich musical culture in SA.

"I was really inspired by the likes of Mi Casa and Johnny Clegg. I saw them live and their music brought African culture to life in all its beauty."

Cox says he knew SA had a lot to offer.

"When you're in a relationship and on two different sides of the world, it's either you are serious or not. I made the decision just before our wedding and I was also very curious about the music in SA.

"I hear a lot of American influence in local music, which I can relate to. But something like kwaito is special and I love to hear Africans stay African despite their race, colour or creed because that inspires me as an American."

He has released his second album, Wonder, following his 2010 debut release Back From The Grave.
