Nonhle leaves a stink in Botswana

Scandalous: Nonhle Thema with Gaborone make-up guru Tlhomamo Diamond

CONTROVERSIAL former reality TV star Nonhle Thema narrowly escaped a catfight at a club in Gaborone, Botswana, last week.

Thema is said to have called the local women at a club "skinny, ugly and Aids infected". Thema was in the neighbouring country with actress Khanyi Mbau at the invitation of the Cigar Lounge Club in the affluent Phakalane Resort.

Before the incident, the two women had a meet-and-greet session with their fans at the Airport Junction Mall in Gaborone, the capital city. The fracas at the club was sparked off when Thema borrowed a phone from one of her escorts to call someone in Johannesburg.

A witness who spoke on condition of anonymity told Sowetan: "She borrowed my friend's phone to speak to her lover back home, and before I knew it she was ranting on the phone about how Batswana girls were so skinny and ugly."

The two escorts who arrived with the 32-year-old Thema said they initially did not take Thema's words seriously until the rant about Aids.

"It did not sink in at first, well I thought she was just being a diva, what really hit me was when she said that baya kula bana le Aids [they are infected with Aids]. I knew that if the rest of the ladies in the club heard that, she might have left with bruises," commented one.

A VIP guest told Sowetan: "She was all so mean, she was so distant that even the organisers had to hunt for her through the club when it was time to cut the cake."

Thema, however, refuted the claims and said she was just playing the "jealous girlfriend" card to her lover. "I was on the phone and talking to my boyfriend who was out of the country at the time, I was telling him about the girls where he was, I was just being a jealous girlfriend," Thema said.
