TV presenter has a narrow escape

POPULAR TV and radio personality Siyabonga Ngwekazi, alias Scoop Makhathini, almost lost his property, but saved his Westdene home from auction at the last minute.

Ngwekazi is a presenter of The Real Goboza, Street Journal, Top Shayela and V-Entertainment.

He is also a co-director in TV production company Parental Advisory Productions which is behind the hit shows Forever Young and MoLove.

Standard Bank dragged Ngwekazi to court this month, the second time in eight months, after he defaulted on his bond repayments.

The dispute with the bank has been lengthy.

He was forced to save his house from a sale in execution in February, and again this month. An auction advert described the property as "a detached single-storey brick residence with tiled roof, comprising kitchen, lounge-dining room, two bedrooms, one bathroom with outbuildings... a garage, servant's room and a swimming pool."

The house was bought for R950000 three years ago and he defaulted on his R6 983. 83 instalments for five months in the first half of last year. Legal action was first taken in June last year. The North Gauteng High Court gave permission in November last year for the property to be auctioned.

The house was to go under the hammer on February 27 and again on October 9.

An employee of the plaintiff's attorneys confirmed that the house was saved at the last minute. "That sale did not proceed, client paid the areas. I cannot give the details of how much but that property was saved," she said.

Ngwekazi told Sowetan he had "suffered a lot financially through having tenants who were not paying rent".

"I also committed to forming a clothing label with my own money. All that, plus looking after my family back in PE, put tremendous financial strain on me. " I am not complaining. These are things I am prepared to go through." mashotol@sowetan.co.za
