HHP, Kweli light up stage

HIP-HOP artist HHP had to miss his son's primary school play to share the stage with US rapper Talib Kweli on Tuesday night in Sandton, Joburg.

Kweli was in the country again after performing at The Dome in Johannesburg last month and asked HHP to join him as part of his intimate two-hour set at Hard Rock Café.

"He sent me a message last week Friday asking that we perform together. Forgetting it was my son's school play, I agreed," said HHP. Not all was lost though as the play runs for three nights, he said.

HHP and Kweli recorded The Sun a few years back and had planned to shoot a video for it, but it had not worked out.

Tuesday's performance was a dream come true for the Mahikeng-born artist who got to freestyle on stage with the New Yorker.

DJ Khenzero on the decks completed the show under lavender lights.

The show attracted a number of celebrity hip-hop fans such as Nelson Mandela's grandson Ndaba Mandela, singer and actor Kabomo, comedians Ndumiso Lili and Loyiso Gola, who rapped along to Kweli's lines.

Rapper Reason was the master of ceremonies.
