21 ICON Pieter-Dirk Uys makes waves at Market Theatre

The brilliance of Uys parody is that it allows South Africans to take a step back and laugh at themselves while gaining some insight and perspective on the country.

Pieter Dirk Uys has stormed the Market Theatre this month with his show Adapt or Fly which offers a candid and hilarious perspective on present day South Africa.

The world-famous, much-loved satirist's one-man show will have a limited run at the Market Theatre until October 26. It features an array of characters, who are all subjected to his offbeat style. The brilliance of Uys parody is that it allows South Africans to take a step back and laugh at themselves while gaining some insight and perspective on the country.

It is this ability of Uys to take clever, challenging content and put an entertaining spin on it that is one of the reasons for his selection as a 21 ICON. The 21 ICON series, which pays tribute to the men and women who have helped shape South Africa, is part of a project by photographer and filmmaker Adrian Steirn.

Uys, who is the 11th icon of the project's second season, will be featured on October 12 in a short film by Steirn. Uys talks to Steirn about growing up under apartheid, the birth of his alter ego Evita Bezuidenhout, and how South Africa's favourite socialite and political activist continues to tackle issues in the "new" South Africa.

Steirn's film on Uys will be screened at 8.27pm on SABC3. His photograph of Uys will appear in this Sunday's City Press and will be sold at a charity auction next year.

ADAPT OR FLY is currently on until October 26 at the Market Theatre in Johannesburg from Friday to Sunday. Parking is available at the new, safe and hassle-free parking lot at the Newtown Junction Mall. Park your car in the underground parking of the mall, and take the lift or escalator to the courtyard level. The Market Theatre is visible from the courtyard. Parking between 7pm and 11pm only costs R10. Tickets to the show start from R83. Book at Computicket.
