THERE are many layers to 37-year-old comedian Tshepo Mogale.

He has worked as a project manager, climbed to the peak of the 60km high Mount Kilimanjaro for charity and sung kwaito among other things.

All this while pursuing a career as a writer for TV comedy shows and stand-up comedian.

When he was contemplating a career in show business, Mogale thought stand-up comedy was the logical thing to try as one did not need capital to buy expensive equipment to tell jokes.

"Stand-up was the easiest and cheapest thing to do. it started like that and it evolved until we did sketch comedy with the Pure Monate Show."

The Bloemfontein native started performing professionally with the Cape Comedy Collective in 1999, which featured the likes of Riaan Moosa, Loyiso Gola, Kagiso Lediga and Marc Lottering.

He believes in comedians working as a collective and is organising a show called Kings and Queens Comedy of Africa to be held at Emperor's Palace, in Kempton Park.

It will feature local and international acts, including Lediga, Tumi Morake, and Nigerian heavyweight Basket Mouth.

Mogale attended high school and university in Cape Town while his mother was working in the city as a nurse and reveals that he was a self-employed taxi driver transporting students between the University of Cape Town and the airport.

When his father later gave him a truck he started a furniture removal business for students, a move that has stood him in good stead as he now co-owns a logistics company.

The comedian has gone back to studying and attends Saturday classes at Unisa where he is working towards a B.Com.

He describes his comedy as a side chick as he says he always has other things that he does.

His TV comedy show credits include Kompleks, Pure Monate, Tonight with Trevor Noah, and as part of the writing team for the Late Night Show with Loyiso Gola.

Mogale loves challenging friends to swimming laps during his spare time and tries out his jokes on his girlfriend.
