Things are not looking good for talented music trio Kwela Tebza.

According to sources the trio returned back home in Soweto because they did not have places to stay.

A close affiliate of theirs says the three "have been squatting at friends and girlfriends' places for a few years now and they need to catch a wake-up before it is too late".

Another source within their circles confirmed that the last straw was when a friend kicked two of the band members, Tshepo and Mpho Lerole, out of his Johannesburg CBD apartment, after they allegedly failed to contribute financially to their stay.

Their detractors said Kwela Tebza's downfall was their refusal to look for regular jobs after their music career failed. Instead, the trio hankered after the high life. He said Kwela Tebza rarely had gigs to perform at.

Two independent sources said Tebogo Lerole had been shacking up with actress Khanyi Mbau at his family home in Diepkloof, Soweto.

"They have been struggling for years, none of them has a car. They do not want to get 9-to-5 jobs because they want to maintain their celebrity status," said a source.

The source added that Tebogo is reduced to running errands for Mbau.

"Tebogo stays at home with Khanyi and their home is not big enough for everybody. Tshepo's long-time girlfriend recently left him because he does not have money. They want to live the Sandton life and it is not cheap," a source added.

Tebogo dismissed the allegations as untrue, and said there was a reason for being back home.

"We have (an upcoming) traditional ceremony at home and that is why we are all home at the moment. I cannot really talk about the ceremony but it's an ongoing thing.

"Once the ceremony is done, we will all go (back) to our places."

He insisted Kwela Tebza's music is on track but said the trio had cut out certain people from their lives because they were shying away from negative publicity.

The musician promised to show Sowetan his place but a day later he said he did not owe Sowetan any explanation. Mbau denied that she lived in Soweto.

UPDATE

According to the latest issue of Drum magazine, Tebogo Lerole and Khanyi Mbau have gone their separate ways after years as one of SA's most loved couples.
