Radio presenter Bonang Matheba has left Metro FM following the station’s refusal to allow her to continue with a World Cup Lifestyle show on SuperSport.

“Metro FM is an exceptional station and it is a pity that my journey with them has been so short. I am an independent freelancer and have been working peacefully with all broadcasters over the years,” Matheba said in a press statement.

“My future potential cannot be jeopardised by accepting terms that will not grow my career. I could not agree to the SABC's blanket terms – in restricting me to work with other broadcasters, even though my contract with them was on radio. Thank you to the team at Metro FM for a wonderful time thus far. Onward and upward!,” she concluded.

According to the SABC none of its employees are allowed to be part of any other broadcasters in any medium.

SABC’s acting chief operating officer Hlaudi Motsoeneng told the SundayWorld newspaper in February that the SABC was against sharing their talent.

"We need to keep all the talent within the SABC because there is a downside to a situation in which people are working here and elsewhere,” he was quoted saying.

"If somebody has a big following on SABC radio, and then does his TV work outside the SABC, he takes his radio following to the opposition with him. We can't afford to invest in resources that then benefit our competitors,” he said.

Matheba can be seen every weekend on SuperSport at 13:00 for the duration of the World Cup. She is also on Clash of the Choirs every Sunday at 17:30 only on Mzansi Magic.
