Shacking Up 101

Trevor Gumbi proves that he’s got the goods as he plays the male lead in local TV’s latest sitcom, Vat ‘n Sit. He had already prepared his SAFTA speech.

Vat ‘n Sit documents the tribulations of Mpho Ledwaba (Liopelo Maphathe), who struggles to prove the authenticity of her love (for a township Zulu man) to her family. She is the last born and only daughter of the royal, wealthy Ledwaba family.

“Thomas wants to marry the love of his life, but her family has rejected his lobola,” Maphathe explains.

Armed with big dreams, a true heart and a talent for baking albeit with no business knowledge, Gumbi has plans to become a successful entrepreneur and a powerful man.

“He believes that his business will make him a wealthy entrepreneur, and enable him to win the Ledwaba family’s respect and acceptance. Thomas will go to any lengths for their approval and often gets himself into all kinds of ridiculous situations,” says Gumbi of his character on Openview HD’s eKasi channel.

The sitcom taps into real South African issues as the concept of ‘Vat ‘n Sit’ is a common South African slang phrase used to describe couples who move in together before marriage.

The concept is no longer seen as forbidden. Now shacking up with your partner is an eye opener which may determine the depth of your relationship in future.

“Vat ‘n Sit is a welcomed addition to our new channel, eKasi+,” says Monde Twala, Group Head: e.tv Channels Division.

“We constantly aim to bring our audiences relevant, entertaining local content that creates conversation. Home-grown comedy is refreshing and we are hopeful that our viewers will love it and want more of it.”

Vat ‘n Sit premieres on Wednesday, 16 April 2014 at 9pm on Channel 105.
