No SAFTAs for Muvhango this year

The 2014 South African Film & Television Awards are taking place tomorrow night at Gallagher Estate Midrand, but unfortunately popular soap Muvhango will not be participating.

It came as a shock for many last month when the soap was not included in the award ceremony’s ‘Best soapie’ nomination list.

At the time the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) explained that Muvhango had not been nominated as it had failed to meet some of the Safta entry guideline requirements.

However TVSA now reports that the soapie creators made a decision, last year, not to take part in the awards.

"Last year we took a decision to revamp our brand and take the entire Muvhango production through a complete overhaul. The creative team then took a decision that entering awards ceremonies was not bringing any values to the production and we therefore decided to concentrate on building our brand and creating awareness with our viewers. We therefore opted to skip the SAFTA’s and concentrate on improving our brand,” Duma Ndlovu was quoted saying.

This leaves Isidingo, Generations, Scandal, Villa Rosa, Isibaya, 7 de Laan, Rhythm City, The Wild and Binneland to vie for the top spot in the ‘Best Soapie Category’.

The awards show will be broadcast on SABC 3 from 7pm on Saturday, 5th April 2014.

Comedians Tumi Morake and Alan Committie will be hosting the event while Bonang Matheba will be presenting the Red Carpet broadcast.
