Over a cold one with Vusi Nova

We got the 411 from the talented Vusi Nova just days before the SAMAs. We wish him luck. Find out more about how he made it on the scene and what he has to share with aspiring artists.

Q: What would you say was your lucky break?

A: Working with people/team that believes in me 110%.

Q: What’s your favourite part of being a musician – Like performance, being in the recording studio or writing music?

A: The best part about my job is to perform live, in front of thousands of fans. I find the reaction of the crowd to be rewarding.

Q: Who in the music industry, local or international, alive or dead, would you mostly like to chat to over an Extra Cold One?

A: The list is so long, but it would be Marvin Gaye!

Q: What would you be doing if you weren’t in the music game?

A: I didn’t have a plan B. So, I dedicated all my energy towards plan A - music, it just had to work.

Q: What’s been the most extraordinary moment of your career so far?

A: I have a few moments, but the one that really stands out is working with Judith Sephuma, D'banj and Femi Kuti on The One Campaign.

Q: Who would you say is your inspiration when it comes to making music?

A: It’s my late mother. She was in love with love and that’s one of the most beautiful thing I have learned from her. Life is also my biggest inspiration. I write about things that I got through, good of bad and through that experience I write about things that my fans can connect to.

Q: What are your favourite venues in SA to perform and party at?

A: Stadiums! There’s nothing more fulfilling then seeing your craft move fans.

Q: Describe the SA music scene in one sentence.

A: We are on a roll!

Q: What words or advice would you give to aspiring South African artist?

A: Never give up, especially if you really believe in what you do. Take the right steps to perfect your craft and surround yourself with positive people.

Q: Which artist would you like to work with in the future?

A: It would be R. Kelly. I think what he is trying do in the States is what I’m trying to do here in SA.
