Zoe brings some life into boring Idols show

Pint sized Zoe Zana proved that dynamite does come in small packages as she left the audience and judges on a high after her performance this weekend.

What was meant to be a joyous and powerful show for the contestants who were backed by the Idols choir ended up being a dull and uninspiring night for all.

Although most of the contestants gave good vocal performances, they lacked the stage presence that was needed to deliver a spectacular performance.

The show got off to a great start with the top 7 and the Idols choir singing the latest hit from Katy Perry, "Roar".

The group had the entire auditorium up on their feet and excited to see what the night had in store but disappointment followed.

Although Crystalene Nair gave one of her best performances since starting the competition with her rendition of Aretha Franklin's “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman”, it wasn’t enough to impress the judges.

"I feel you are choosing material beyond your grasp," Idols judge Gareth Cliff told the Durban teacher.

Musa Sukwene sang Anthony Hamilton's “Pass Me Over” and Brenden Ledwaba chose Josh Groban’s “You raise me up”. The two managed to give performances that were good but hardly great or memorable.

The same could be said for Sonke who took on a Jimmy Cliff classic 'Many rivers to cross'.

After his performance Unathi expressed her concern over the poor song choices made by the top 7 and Randall said that he felt Sonke had chosen a song that was “beyond him simply because he is too young”.

Christina had another bad performance as she bravely took on ‘fallin’ by Alicia Keys.

"You've had a couple of great nights on Idols, I think though the challenge tonight is that you are good pop singer, and not a good soul singer," Randall told her.

Bunny’s version of the Beatles song ‘Let it be’ received good reviews but it was Zoe’s fiery performance of The Jackson 5’s "Can you feel it", that won the night.

"Zoe, thank you, that was entertaining. You are an entertainer," Gareth said.

The public will now have to vote to keep their favourite contestant in the competition.

The voting results will be announced on Tuesday at 19:30 and the contestant with the least number of votes will have to say goodbye.
