Maps Maponyane uniquely distinct from soccer dad

“Soccer felt like I was living in my dads’ shadow" ...

Cosmopolitan’s 'sexiest man' Masego Maponyane, son of legendary soccer player Marks Maponyane is living his dreams that uniquely distincts him from his father.

Soweto born Maponyane popularly known as ‘Maps’ is no typical kasi boy. This 22 year old will be launching a clothing line Augustine for men at theend of June showcasing a range that depicts his fashion dress sense.

“This clothing design comes from how I view men’s suit, my attention to detail came into this meticulous product. It’s a stylish wear for men, I love clothes and it’s an exciting venture to share my creativity,” says Maponyane.

Unlike his father, dribbling the ball was not his career choice. Strutting the catwalks, dressing sexy and taking pictures have become a career that joyfully wakes him up every morning.

Although he is passionate about soccer, that dream faded because he did not want to live in his father’s shadow.

“It helps that I am in a different field because everything I do has nothing to do with soccer.

“Soccer felt like I was living in my dads’ shadow.

"Before, all I wanted to do is play soccer just like dad, but every time I played a game I would be compared to him, when I scored others would knock me down saying your dad would score better," says Maps Maponyane.

He adds: “I try being like dad in terms of excelling in what I do knowing that he was his own so am I, its good put a distinct identification between the two.”

Maps is one of South Africa's young males celebrated for his handsome looks and untouchable sense of style that has dubbed him Cosmopolitans Sexiest Man and GQ’s Second Best Dressed Man.

For Maps hailing as Cosmopolitans Sexiest man was an unexpected turn of events which opened doors to bountiful admirers, and finds it flattering.

“It was the weirdest thing, I did not expect nor ever viewed myself in that light.

“Since this title, I have come across forward people, who send me the most awkward texts on social media,” he laughs.

Speaking about GQ naming him the Second Best Dressed Man, he says dressing up is no big deal. He describes his modish taste for clothes as normal.

“I can dress myself. Its normal, nothing special. It’s all about knowing the different aspects of dressing yourself that makes you stand out from others.”

When SowetanLIVE asked about him dating the two famous B’s in the industry, he rolled his eyes in absolute shock - and indicated that relationships are far from this model's mind.

“Is he dating Boity, is he dating Bonang, no I am single.

“Both B’s are good friends of mine, just because we hang out, it doesn’t mean we are together,” he says.
