A first for film on social media

A FULL-LENGTH film on social media has made its premiere for the first time ever.

The movie, A Lucky Man, by Gordon Clarke, was made available for uploading on Mxit on Monday.

Cellphone users will be able to access the movie using Mxit's cinemo application, which was launched inJanuary.

The application has three elements, which include movies, public service announcements and music videos.

The film will be watched like a series with 18 segments lasting four minutes per episode.

Sarah Rice from Mxit said there had been over 90000 subscribers on the cinemo application since its launch.

She added that the project was spreading important social messages and making sure that people received help by referring them to organisations such as Childline.

The film is about the real life story of ex-gang boss Ernie "Lastig" Solomon, based on the Cape Flats.

It is about the search for belonging in asociety affected by abuse, drugs and violence.

"A Lucky Man reflects many of the incredibly difficult social issues South Africans face. I am looking forward to the conversations these episodes inspire," Marlon Parker, of Mxit Reach Ecosystem, said.

Parker said this was an opportunity to spark conversations about social issues such as drug abuse, HIV-Aids and gangsterism.

The app is designed specifically for smartphones and is compatible with over 3000 handsets.

The cost of each episode ranges between R1 and R2 per megabyte depending on which network you use.

The files are compressed to suite the smartphone market, which means they will not go beyond the two megabyte mark.

Mxit intends to release the next movie next month.

Rice hinted that the next film will be a Nigerian drama titled Shadows in the Night.
