Born to sing like his mom

PROMISING: Don Chaka

THEMBA Machaka, son of singer Yvonne Chaka Chaka, is proof that the apple does not fall far from the tree.

The promising youngster, whose songs Uzosha, I Wanna Be There and Ubuntu Yistayela, are dominating the airwaves of community radio stations such as the Vaal's Thetha FM and Kasie FM in Ekurhuleni, is following in his mother's footsteps.

Machaka, 28, also known as Don Chaka, said: "I believe I was conceived in a musical womb. I think mom used to sing while I was in her belly and I was born singing or rapping," he said, laughing.

"I tried to run away from music because my mother was doing it and I always thought people would think I was doing it because of her, but music chose me," he said.

Machaka acknowledges his mother's influence in his life.

"She did not make music for the money but to change people's lives. All I want to do is to change the world with my music and let people know about the power of God," Machaka said.

He said his mother tried to dissuade him from becoming a musician.

"My mother tried to stop me many times from pursuing a career in music because it is a known fact that the industry is corrupt.

"I guess she played a good role in protecting me and helped me develop a thick skin to become the artist I am today," Machaka added.

"Everyone knows that I would not allow my children to be in the music industry because I know the highs and lows of the business and like any parent, I don't want to see any of my children suffering," Yvonne Chaka Chaka said yesterday.

"I have come to terms with the fact that I have to support Themba in his music career."

Chaka's music is a fusion of various genres, which he said had helped create his unique "chakalaka mix of kwaito, mbhaqanga, hip-hop and house music".

Chaka's debut album is expected to be released on his birthday in March.
