EACH year audiences tune in to isiZulu radio station Ukhozi FM to hear which song ushers us into the new year. Monday midnight was no different, but the song that ushered people into 2013 was a surprise song.
The honour went to Summertime by local lad DJ Tira, real name Mthokozisi Khathi, and featuring popular KwaZulu-Natal kwaito music act Big Nuz and Joocy.
Music lover Sakhile Dumakude, originally from Ladysmith but now based in Germiston, Gauteng, says he was shocked because he felt that Summertime was popular in some parts of the country, not in the whole of South Africa.
"I seriously thought DJ Vetkoek vs Mahoota, featuring Dr Malinga with Via Orlando, or DJ Oskido's Tsa Mandebele, would have become one of the songs playing on Ukhozi FM at midnight," he says.
Ukhozi FM New Year's Eve chart is solely controlled by votes from the public. Just after midnight @DJTira tweeted: "Thank You South Africa. Ezase!!!!! #SummertimeNo.1"
