Magical evening with top women musicians
The Basadi Women of Jazz were sensual and kept jazz lovers interested on percussion, guitars, reeds and brass as they awaited the star act, Gloria Bosman collaborating with Siphokazi and Pu2ma
THE Oude Meester Ekurhuleni Comes Alive jazz was summed up beautifully by Sowetan's French-speaking guests for the evening as "la soirée est très magnifique" - the evening is very stunning.
The event on Friday was in celebration of women and mothers in particular ahead of Mother's Day on Sunday.
Indeed, the line-up of artists for the night reflected a jazz concert with an almost exclusively female list of musicians.
The Basadi Women of Jazz were sensual and kept jazz lovers interested on percussion, guitars, reeds and brass as they awaited the star act, Gloria Bosman collaborating with Siphokazi and Pu2ma.
Pu2ma, who was wearing a sensational tight-fitting red dress, seemed perfectly in sync with Bosman.
They performed a lovely "love song to Jesus", as Pu2ma described the gospel number.
The setting was beautiful but one could not help feel that the guests could have been more responsive to the women performers, who sang and played their hearts out.
Bosman teased those who did not come with their spouses and moaned that "slow dancing has gotten out of fashion" - a sentiment the crowd groaned back to in agreement.
She was later joined by her daughter Siphosihle, who was a bit reluctant to take to the stage, and another gospel number ensued.
"It is great to be celebrated while you are still alive," Bosman said. "These women are here to celebrate me.
"When I am dead and buried, leave me alone."
The men in the mature audience complained that she failed to ignite that special fire that they had expected.
DJ Loops completed the night with old-school kwaito and house tunes.
Guests brother and sister Hamat Yakhoub and Djoumbu Awkaltouw are avid music lovers from Chad who have been in the country for three weeks.
Djoumbu said she studied South African music and history at school. "But hearing the sound live is a beautiful experience," she said.
