Reality TV is taking over

REALITY TV in South African is on steroids! From public broadcaster, SABC, to pay TV - everyone is upping their game.

OPINIONATED: Mika Stefano

The season premiere of 10 Over 10 on Vuzu last week left me wanting more. I think South Africans have finally outgrown the toddler tendencies of taking everything to heart. What better way of poking fun at celebrities than assigning them to do the dirty work themselves.

10 Over 10 is a sure-fire hit for the young generation and a guilty pleasure for older viewers who should know better but just can't help watching the scandalous show.

The show is using celebrities who are witty, silly and fearless, to speak their minds on any topic. The topics are light, but entertaining. It's like reading the comic strip at the end of a business newspaper.

The premiere had a panel of interesting celebrities, ranging from the stunning Babalwa Mneno, pictured,to the controversial, but easy-on-the-eye, Nonhle Thema, also pictured, to the sharp-tongued and shrewd Trevor Gumbi and a very girlie Uyanda Mbuli, who pulled a Paula Abdul by seeing good in everyone.

The show was based on the top 10 celebrities on Twitter. Nonhle Thema walked away with the Twitter crown. She beat Gareth Cliff, Helen Zille and Simphiwe Dana, among others.

For the likes of me who do not speak celebrity, despair not, 10 Over 10 has been courteous enough to include its very own urban dictionary on the screen, where celebrity jargon is deciphered.

If the first show was anything to go by, we are in for real fun as most participants who were on the show did not have any sacred cows.

Another plus is that there are no presenters who might have preconceived notions and hidden agendas on topics.

I hope E! Entertainment's Top Ten is watching this show on the rear-view mirror because the witty 10 Over 10 is right behind.

If you are a sensitive person who takes things to heart, maybe this show isn't your cup of tea. But if you like to laugh and you think people like Mika Stefano, who has an opinion on everything are entertaining, then this show is definitely for you.

  • Catch 10 Over 10 on DSTV's Vuzu, 123 on Wednesday at 7.30pm.
