With his team, Kedibone Mulaudzi will embark on a nationwide tour as the Soweto Comedy Festival

STAND-UP comedian Kedibone Mulaudzi says comedy is big in South Africa and it would be a big mistake to regard it as a "new thing".

The Limpopo-born comedian says every day comedy fans are doubling up because laughing is a new trend.

The founder of the successful Soweto Comedy Festival, Mulaudzi wants to put it on a national level. With his team, he will embark on a nationwide tour as the Soweto Comedy Festival.

Soweto Comedy Festival is staged annually in Soweto and it features the country's best talent in comedy.

He says: "The aim is to promote the brand. For the past six years I have been building the brand and I feel we are ready to launch nationally."

Mulaudzi will be performing in various places in Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Bloemfontein, Welkom, Eastern Cape, Mthatha, Durban, Margate and Pietermaritzburg among other places.

The team of comics includes Mulaudzi, Nqaba Ngcobo, Jody Jake and Nina Hastie.

"We kick-start the tours at the end of April. The purpose is to grow the brand and take it to the people."

He says he has added an international comedian, Yoursie Thomas of Los Angeles, just to give the tour some weight. Our strategy is to invite all these international comedians as we tour South Africa. When we go overseas next year, we will also use them. In each province we plan to use a different international comedians. Next year we are taking the brand to Asia, North and South America and Australia."

That is not all. Mulaudzi and his team will represent South Africa at the famous Edenburg Comedy Festival in the UK in August.

Mulaudzi started the concept in 2004 at Horror Café in Newtown. It has unearthed a lot of talent including Trevor Noah.
