NEW CHALLENGES: Mio Khondleka and Queenie Grootboom will be leaving MPowerFM next month after 4 years on air as presenters of the popular MPower Breakfast Show.

AFTER four years on air as presenters of the popular MPowerFM breakfast show, South Africa's first husband-and-wife celebrity DJs, Mio Khondleka and Queenie Grootboom, have quit the airwaves.

The rhythm of Mpumalanga, as the station is affectionately known, confirmed that the lovebirds have quit.

The pair will officially leave the station on March 17. They are moving to Port Elizabeth to pursue a new business venture.

They hosted the Power Breakfast Show on weekdays between 6am and 10am, with its smell of bacon, eggs and a daily dose of Mpumalanga-style fun.

Power Breakfast Show delivered local news and traffic reports while Khondleka and Grootboom discussed a number of subjects regarding children in the "kids in the car" segment.

MpowerFMprogrammes manager Tony Murrell said although the couple had years of fun on air, they were ready to explore new challenges.

"It was absolutely wonderful working with them, their dedication to the listeners and support of the station's brand was enormous," Murrell said.

"They have been a huge asset to the station and we will miss them as on-air personalities and as friends," he said.

Khondleka said: "It's been over four years that we have been in Mpumalanga and our listeners and people in general have been so wonderful to us."

Grootboom thanked the people of the province for accepting them and making them part of their lives.

Grootboom was announced the winner in the 2011 Woman for Media as the most influential womaninthemediain Mpumalanga.

Murrell said they would launch a search for the next morning stars to replace the couple.
