FIVE new categories have been added to South Africa's biggest radio excellence awards and - with about 700 entries so far - the third annual MTN Radio Awards promises to be bigger and better.

Last year's big winners include Kaya FM's Thabo "T-bose" Mokwele who won best music presenter.

Ukhozi FM's Zandile Tembe won in the best content producer - Non-Commercial.

Thato "DJ Fresh" Sikwane of 5FM was crowned the master of daytime presenting.

There were about 400 and 200 entries last year and 2010 respectively. The awards' third edition was launched in Sandton yesterday.

MTN Radio Awards chief operating officer Taryn Westoby said there were still a few entries that needed to be captured on their system.

Awards chairman Rich Mkhondo said the team had learnt a lot from the previous years.

"This year, we made sure that we covered every angle.

"In keeping with the founding philosophy of the MTN Radio Awards we want to acknowledge excellent work in radio and encourage and inspire even greater work to ensure that listeners are offered excellent, compelling programming," Mkhondo said.

He said MTN has included a new category to cater for public broadcasting services - who were previously excluded from the awards.

"We will ensure the integrity of the results through precluding judges from scoring entries in categories within which they have interests.

"This means that people from commercial stations will not judge entries in the that sector, and people from community stations will not judge entries in that sector as well," he said.

MTN SA brand and communications general manager Ryan Gould said people behind the scenes were taken for granted.

"We recognise best talent. Radio is a critical and powerful medium. It reaches about 90% of the South African population each week," Gould said.

The new categories included are best afternoon drive presenter and show, best weekend radio show, best programme innovation and best radio documentary - long and short.

Other categories include, best breakfast show presenter, best business and finance presenter, best news and actuality producer, a lifetime achievement award, commercial radio station of the year, PBS station of the year and community station of the year.
