The SABC intends promoting local music content through a new distribution agreement signed with the Association of Independent Record Companies.
“The music industry is a major contributor to the economy,” Arts and Culture Minister Paul Mashatile said on Thursday.
“In this decade, one of the major drivers of growth is going to come from the creative industry.”
The agreement was signed on December 13 last year and announced at a media briefing on Thursday.
Mashatile applauded the partnership, but stressed that the proceeds had to reach the artists who produced music videos. He said it was important to broadcast more South African content rather than relying on “junk” from other parts of the world.
Communications Minister Dina Pule said this was the first of many new partnerships. The agreement was a good start, she said.
