Seputla is now in his element
Actor finds theatre more fulfilling
SEPUTLA Sebogodi, who has just left Generations after playing the character of Kenneth Mashaba for six years has landed a new role in a musical marking Alexandra township's 1957 bus boycott.
Sebogodi says he is enjoying theatre more than television soapies. He plays the role of Mudzunya, who was a member of the committee that organised the Alexandra bus boycott in 1957, which was a protest against a bus company (Putco) raising its fares.
Commuters, including elderly people and the infirm, stopped using buses and instead started walking to and from work.
The musical, Azikhwelwa, which is celebrates the 55th anniversary of the 1957 bus boycott, is directed by Lindani O Nkosi, written by Reshoketswe Maredi and produced by Pascal Damoyi.
The show is sponsored by the national Department of Arts and Culture.
"For me playing a role in a musical is like going back home because theatre is where it all started," Sebogodi says.
"This is my first love. I understand people are addicted to soapies and I have had to take a huge cut in income, but this is what fulfills me.
"When I left Generations I told myself I was going to do three theatre shows and three movies a year and still have time for my children."
He says he could not do that much while he was in Generations because of the soapie's tight shooting schedules.
"For example, when my mother died about three years ago, I had to shoot two scenes that required me to appear happy immediately after burying her.
"And last year when my son was involved in a terrible accident at school, a life-threatening situation, I had to shoot a scene before rushing to the hospital," he says.
Sebogodi says he can now do what he has loved all his life.
"I have been holding theatre workshops for free with the disadvantaged, having personally benefitted from the teaching and generosity of others such as Darlington Michael.
"I have also started a recording label, Putla Records, that will sign artists, particularly from the rural areas.
"I want to empower them because I share their background."
Sebogodi will release his third album in mid-February through Putla Records.
