TopTV pursues plan to launch 24/7 porn

Jan 16, 2012 | Sibongile Mashaba | 18 comments

SUBSCRIPTION channel TopTV is continuing with plans to launch three 24-hour adult channels.

Spokeswoman Melinda Connor told Sowetan yesterday that plans were in place to launch the pornography channels.

"We are going ahead with the launch. The channels were supposed to be launched in December but management decided to postpone it. (The launch) will now be on January 20," Connor said.

This despite a court interdict application by the the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) to stop the launch of the channels.

Judgment in the matter was reserved for Wednesday.

Icasa will due to hold public hearings on TopTV's plans to air the adult channels today. The hearing will be held in Sandton, Johannesburg, at 10am.

Icasa spokesman Paseka Maleka said they had received "a number" of submissions from people opposed to the channel. "After the hearing, Icasa will sit down to look at the submissions and then make a decision," he said.

African Christian Democratic Party president Kenneth Meshoe said porn channels were not contributing positively to the building of a new SA.

"We have high rates of rape in South Africa. Young children who are involved in such acts always point to pornography as their source. The launch of the channel will add fuel to a fire that is already burning," Meshoe said.

He accused TopTV of not caring about society.

The Family Policy Institute said: "If TopTV succeeds in launching porn channels in SA, it will open the floodgates for other broadcasters to open the sewers and release a flood of filth into our communities.

"Porn must be eradicated!" reads an alert on their website.

With or without porn, people will rape. Why blaming everything on porn?

I hope DSTV will also give us some porn action or we will all relocate to TopTV.

I'm not a big fan of pornography but I fail to see how porn and rape are related.

I am yet to hear of a case of a rape perp confessing to the fact that he raped a woman after watching a porn dvd.

These do gooders must STFU and get a life. I am confident TopTV will implement the proper processes to ensure that those who subscribe are over 18

Porn is the single biggest reason why the internet exists. Love or hate it but its a fact.

most people who rape are intoxicated by some drug combined with ALCOHOL. why don't these idiots stage protest actions by SA breweries,BAT and the dept that issues liquor licenses???

I say porn will reduce rape stats in SA. Some pastors wont have to resort raping, they can just lock themselves in their rooms and masturbate as much as they like, all day.
