We cast a critical eye on Miss SA pageant

SUN City's Superbowl rolled out the red carpet on Sunday for 12 of South Africa's most beautiful women at the Miss South Africa pageant.

Celebs brought old-fashioned elegance and glamour to the red carpet. Black was a popular colour, with many stars opting for the classic up-do for their hair.

We look at the hits and misses of the night.

HITS

  • Former Miss SA Joan Ramagoshi, who was one of the judges, takes the award for best-dressed woman. She looked very hot and very pregnant in a dazzling red, body-hugging dress.
  • Minister Fikile Mbalula takes the award of best-dressed man. He looked amazing in a black tuxedo.
  • You could see it was tailor-made for him the proportions were so accurate. Usually tuxedos are very tricky for short, slightly plump men.
  • Miss SA judge Paledi Segapo was also one of the hot guys. He came in a white military inspired jacket from his label, Palse Homme.
  • Bridget Masinga looked good in a red lace number. We loved its silhouette.
  • Penny Lebyane kept it safe with a velvety knee-length dress. But we feel she could have done better than that. This was a Miss SA event, for crying out loud.
  • Miss SA 2010 Bokang Montjane looked classy in her body-hugging mermaid dress.
  • She had that Naomi Campbell resemblance going for her. She was a classy Miss SA. Pity she got so little attention during her reign.
  • DJ Tira was on point. He did colour-blocking tactfully. We hope Mampintsha took some notes from his boss.
  • Proverb, who was the night's MC, didn't look at all bad in a slick black suit.

MISSES

  • Kabonina Qubeka came in hubby-attracting gear. While everyone else was fanning themselves because of the heat, she opted for a blankety Ndebele outfit that exposed her stomach.
  • She looked as if she were going to a Heritage Day event. When she was tired of grabbing all the attention she returned in a short, slinky black number.
  • Miss SA judge Sonia Booth also offended the fashion police with a hideous David Tlale dress. Her head stuck out of a poodle-like ruffle.
  • You would have sworn she had no neck at all. We suspect the dress was made out of straps from the show-stopper dress Tatum Keshwar wore at Tlale's bridge show.
  • Sophie Ndaba came in a clingy gold dress that pinched her boobs and showed her love handles. She could have done with one size bigger. She is an evergreen, though.
  • Peggy Sue Khumalo, Miss South Africa 1996, is a pretty woman with class and poise. We were surprised when she came in a leg-showing dress. It felt like looking at granny's leg.
  • The green evening dresses designed by Paul van Zyl for Miss SA contestants looked very 1980s. Who wears A-line ball gowns in this day and age? Today's evening dresses are body-hugging silhouettes.
  • What was with using white designers only for a Miss SA pageant?
  • Gert-Johan Coetzee's blue hair was a hot mess. He looked like a clown. The less said the better.
