Mngoma, mom mesmerise music lovers

IT WAS the great classic by Abdullah Ebrahim - Real Blue - which last night became the defining moment for violinist Tshepo Mngoma's performance during the Old Mutual Jazz at the Theatre on Nelson Mandela Square in Sandton.

Showing his versatility, Mngoma started his delivery of the classic with a captivating vocal solo backed by his guitarist and drummer.

With the audience now under his spell, Mngoma took the performance further by requesting his mother, classical diva Sibongile Khumalo, to join them on stage.

The two dazzled the audience, taking turns in dashing out African melodies.

"It felt great, and I'd like to think that she (Khumalo) is very proud of the work that I have done, not just the album but also producing and working with other musicians," said Mngoma.

"Working in her band was quite an experience, and I learnt a lot."

Mngoma performed the same song when the two were part of the band which toured the world with Hugh Masekela, performing some of the trumpeter's favourite tunes.
