SOUTH Africa's two-time Grammy Award-winning gospel group, the Soweto Gospel Choir, continues to shine in the global arena.

As if winning Grammy awards was not enough, it scooped another international accolade last week at the 32nd Annual Sports Emmy Awards in New York.

The choir shared the Sports Emmy award for outstanding music composition-director-lyric award with famous Irish rock band.

The two famous groups were involved in ESPN's 2010 Fifa World Cup music presentation.

Beverly Bryer, the choir's executive producer and director, said: "We are proud to be associated with ESPN and U2 for their magnificent World Cup television campaign."

Since the Soweto Gospel Choir's introduction to the world eight years ago, it has amassed a growing local and international fan base and received many local and international awards.

"It's really exciting to add an Emmy to the choir's three Sama Awards, two Grammy Awards, three associated Grammy Awards and an Oscar nomination."

She said the choir had performed in Europe, Asia, Australia, the UK and the US to critical acclaim.

Founded in late 2002, the choirs, which is the first South African group to perform at the Academy Awards, has an unbelievable array of accomplishments to its name.

Having won two Grammy awards and three Samas, the choir has established its name internationally.

Apart from U2, it has collaborated with diverse stars such as Peter Gabriel, Robert Palmer, Josh Groban, Celine Dion and Akon.
