Khabonina treks back to stage

AFTER almost a year of silence actress Khabonina Qubeka will return to the stage in a new theatre production called The Table.

Qubeka launched her stage career eight years ago with African Footprint.

She then dumped theatre and starred in the TV series Muvhango.

Now, Qubeka - who is also a professional dancer - says she is going back to theatre to refresh her acting skill.

The Table, produced by actress and director Sylvaine Strike, is scheduled to open at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown in June.

It will then have a season at Johannesburg's Market Theatre and finally Aardklop National Festival, in Potchefstroom, in August.

"I am excited to get a lead role in a theatre production.

"I will be showing those who doubt my acting skills my true talent and passion," she says.

In The Table, Qubeka plays a black woman brought up by a Jewish family.

Speaking about the play she adds: "It's about four children re-uniting with their mother over a Friday night meal - where a world of love, sibling rivalry, confused genetics and traditions is unveiled. "Her mother is a domestic worker for a Jewish family.

"She gets the chance to study overseas and that makes her siblings unhappy."
