Musical fireworks at Bushfire Festival

WITH South Africa positioned as Africa's best music and cultural hub for live events, Swaziland is slowly following in its footsteps.

The kingdom will be hosting its fifth annual Bushfire Festival from May 27 to 29 at House of Fire at Malandela's Farm.

The three-day gig features artists such as Goldfish, Black Coffee and Jamaican-Canadian dub poet D'Bi.

The event offers live music, theatre, poetry, dance deejays, film, interactive workshops, a crafts and design fair-trade market, a global food fair and more.

Event organiser Jiggs Thorne says Bushfire is an explosion of entertainment that lights up the picturesque kingdom of Swaziland at the acclaimed House on Fire performance venue.

The festival's theme this year is "Mixing the Point", with a focus on pan-African and international artistic and cultural collaboration.

"The main concept of the theme is to promote cultural meeting points through collaboration, cultivating creative synergies and celebra-ting our common humanity, finding harmony in contrast," Thorne says.

"Bushfire celebrates bringing diverse people together and encouraging integration. Its eclectic programme of world music reflects our theme - and this year we'll be introducing some very exciting collaborative projects to the line-up."

Thorne says every year Bushfire attracts an array of premier music acts from Africa and the globe, cementing its status as one of the top festivals in the region.

"This international arts festival is not only about having an awesome time with good friends in a gorgeous setting, but is also a pioneer on the continent in socially responsible and sustainable event staging."

He says it supports the growth and development of the arts while highlighting the need to raise funds for some of Swaziland's most pressing social needs.

All festival profits will be donated to Young Heroes, an NGO providing education, healthcare, food and general support to Aids orphans.

One-day tickets range from R150 to R200, and a VIP pass from R350 to R400. Tickets at www.swazi.travel.
