Somizi lands TV job

GAY socialite and musician Somizi Mhlongo has joined celebrity gossip and entertainment show, The Real Goboza

Mhlongo started his new job on Sunday, doing interviews with celebrities at the opening of the Broadway musical Dreamgirls.

The celebrated performer, dancer and actor is joining Phat Joe and Brenda Ngxoli, who are the current presenters.

Though producers have insisted that Mhlongo is just an addition to the show, sources have disclosed that he will be replacing Ngxoli soon.

When the show started Ngxoli was accused of lacking presenting skills. A source further says producers do not know how to tell her but it will be around April.

The Real Goboza producer, Sydney Matlhaku, confirmed Mhlongo's appointment.

"Somizi did the Dreamgirls function for us and will be doing a lot of celebrity events while the two will be in the studio. Brenda is not going anywhere."

Mhlongo said he was chosen for the show because they wanted someone who had that "I don't care attitude".

"I am happy about the opportunity because it suits my profile and personality well.

"Brenda and Joe focus on the softer side of things while I tackle serious stuff. With all the experience that I have I am not coming here to make friends."

When Sowetan approached Ngxoli, she did not know that Mhlongo had joined The Real Goboza.

"Somizi is a great person and will fit in the show. However, as far as I know I am not leaving the show. But I am not the right person to talk to, call the producers."

The Real Goboza airs on Saturdays at 6pm on SABC1.
