Mngoma to direct musical Dream Girls

JAZZ violinist Tshepo Mngoma has always dreamt big, but he never thought he would be asked to direct the Broadway hit musical Dream Girls.

Joining an award-winning musical like Dream Girls proved that Mngoma is a force to be reckoned with. Mngoma and other South Africans have been roped in to make the local Dream Girls production a success.

The show opens on March 13 at the Teatro Monte Casino in Johannesburg and Mngoma cannot wait for another goose-bump moment.

Mngoma, who has a flourishing solo music career, said landing the role in the American musical has elevated him to another level.

"This is the greatest opportunity for me. I am learning every minute, though there is too much work.

"We are working with an American and local team. The show promises to be a blast and local singers have responded well."

He will not only be the musical director but also a conductor.

"I will be standing in front of a big orchestra and I feel this is one of the biggest achievements of my career."

Mngoma graduated from the University of Cape Town with a Bachelor of Music degree, majoring in jazz violin. The son of music diva Sibongile Khumalo has composed a piece that was performed at the Jazz Meets Symphony concert at the Linder Auditorium.

He has been featured in recordings such as Quest and Immortal Secrets by his mother, Kwela and Van Toeka Af by Mafikizolo, Sekunjalo by Malaika, Joyous Celebration 6, 7 and 8, and Dance With Me by his wife Swazi Dlamini.

He recently toured the US, Canada and Jamaica with Hugh Masekela as part of the South African All Stars.

Dream Girls has also been adapted into a film, in which American Grammy-award winner Jennifer Hudson starred. Local actors Lindiwe Bungane, Aubrey Poo and Caroline Borole are also on the line-up.
