Veteran singer Khanyile dies

THE South African music industry has yet again suffered a huge loss at the passing of talented singer Siphiwe Khanyile of gospel group Avante

A crucial member of the four member group, his mellow voice will definitely be missed in the albums the group will release after his death.

However, the fans can still be charmed by Khanyile's voice in the group's latest album titled Impilo (Life) released late last year by the group's new recording label Izwi Music Production, which is owned by Xolani Majozi.

The group relocated from Johannesburg last year for Durban, after leaving EMI the recording company that it was previously signed to.

The launch of Impilo on April 23 in Durban last year, was the group's first release after relocating from Johannesburg.

Like many Durban musicians, Avante had left their home town to hunt for lucrative recording deals in Johannesburg, where they spent over a decade trying to crack the market.

The group broke into the industry when they made it to the finals of the talent search show, Shell Road to Fame, in 1993.

They then gained prominence four years later with the release of their debut album, Sinethemba.

Khanyile, who died in hospital on Wednesday was admitted to King Edward Hospital in Durban last Wednesday after suffering a stroke.

He will be buried next week on Saturday in Durban. A memorial service will be held at Ekhaya Multi-art Centre on Thursday.

His funeral service will be held at KwaMashu Recreation Centre at 10am on Saturday, his producer Majozi said yesterday.

He is survived by his daughter. Nompilo, 16.
