Durban cocked for a festive season jazz revolution ...

IN A move that is likely to make Durban in particular, and KwaZulu-Natal in general, attractive to jazz lovers, the provincial department of arts and culture, eThekwini municipality's Living Cultures, in partnership with eThekwini Jazz Society, will launch a monthly Durban Jazz Revolution.

The launch, themed eJazz Music Festival, takes place at the Bat Centre tomorrow at 7pm.

The line-up will include McCoy Mrubata, Ernie Smith, Bongani Nkwanyana, Vanessa Moodley, Heels Over Head, Brian Thusi, Mkhumbane Jazz Ensemble, UKZN Jazz Ensemble and many others.

Organiser Monwabisi Grootboom said this monthly event was a continuation of the 2010 Fifa World Cup Jazz programme.

The programme "proved to be a great success and showcased a lot of talent within our city. It is aimed at developing local jazz artists and will also empower them with life and business skills," he said.

"The provincial department of arts and culture and Living Cultures will work with the eThekwini Jazz Society to make sure that our artists are empowered in many ways.

"The festival will be in the form of a picnic. Many provinces hold jazz festivals. It pains us to see people in KwaZulu-Natal leaving the province to find entertainment elsewhere. We hope that this festival will attract not only South Africans but international crowds as well," Grootboom said.

He said they aimed to put jazz on Durban's entertainment calender.

"Other music genres are given opportunities, especially during the festive season. We would like to see jazz receiving the same attention," Grootboom said.

Plans are afoot for next year's calendar of events, starting on January 9 in Umlazi; February 6 at the Harbourview Jazz Restaurant (Bat Centre) and March 6 through to April 3 at the Rainbow Restaurant in Pinetown.

Tickets for the launch are available from Computicket and at the door and cost R100 a person.
